Energy Efficiency Index (EEI)

Different types of mains-powered ballasts for fluorescent lamps consume varying amounts of energy and are therefore classified into seven different classes based on the energy efficiency index. This index is valid throughout Europe and allows for a comparison of ballasts in terms of their energy consumption. This energy efficiency index is abbreviated as EEI.

It is based on the system's efficiencyBallast/Light source, rather than system performance as in the past. This means that not only system performance but also lamp performance is now taken into account. The following classes are used:

  • Energy Efficiency Index A1 for dimmable electronic ballasts
  • Energy Efficiency Index A2 for electronic ballasts with reduced losses
  • Energy Efficiency Index A3 for electronic ballasts
  • Energy Efficiency Index B1 for magnetic ballasts with very low losses
  • Energy Efficiency Index B2 for low-loss magnetic ballasts
  • Energy Efficiency Index C for magnetic ballasts with moderate losses (prohibited)
  • Energy Efficiency Index D for magnetic ballasts with very high losses (prohibited)

The last two EEI classes—and thus ballasts of types C and D—are now banned due to their very high energy consumption. In addition, there is an additional abbreviation that immediately indicates the highest possible efficiency. This classification suffix is BAT, which stands for “best available technology.” For lamps used inEmergency Lighting This energy efficiency index does not apply.
