Color Rendering Index

A light fixture's color rendering is indicated by the color rendering index, which shows how naturally colors appear in the surrounding environment when theLighting . The abbreviation Ra or CRI is used for this index. Color rendering is one of many important quality criteria when purchasing a lamp, because no one wants to see the colors of illuminated objects appear washed out—unless, of course, you are specifically using a colored light source.

The higher the color rendering index, the more naturally colors in the environment are rendered, with the maximum being an Ra value of 100. This corresponds to the light emitted by the sunDaylight and is derived from eight standard test colors. It measures the color rendering quality of light sources with the sameColor Temperature as described; however, a slightly lower Ra value does not necessarily rule out purchasing this light fixture. The artificial light depends on both the location where it will be used and theVisual Task . This results in the following typical values, among others:

  • Good to very good color rendering index of Ra=80–90 for residential, school, andOffice Lighting
  • Excellent color rendering index of Ra=90–100 for residential lighting or lamps used at graphic design workstations

In Germany, luminaires and light sources with a color rendering index of less than 80 may not be sold.
