The abbreviation GS stands for the “Tested Safety” mark and confirms compliance with the Equipment Safety Act. It is displayed alongside the initials of the respective testing agency, which in Germany may be, for example, TÜV or VDE. In Europe, this GS mark is in fact the only legally regulated certification mark for product safety. The mark has been awarded since 1977, and each product undergoes thorough testing before receiving the GS mark. In the lighting sector, for example, regular inspections of lighting manufacturing facilities are conducted, or new products are compared with previously tested samples. Safety regulations that must be complied with include, among other things, the accuracy of the instructions for use and the absence of any risk to human health. The GS mark is intended to show consumers, when purchasing a lamp, a light source, or any other product, that it meets all safety standards and poses no danger. Especially with electronic devices such as lighting fixtures, safety is, of course, always the top priority.
