So-called "half-night operation," often referred to as "half-night mode," is used in street lighting to save energy during periods of low traffic. In this system, individual lamps are not simply turned off, but their output is reduced; this is because turning them off completely can result in uneven lighting that poses a hazard to traffic. For fixtures equipped with only one light source, the output of a single light point is then reduced from, for example, 80 watts to a lower 50 watts. Only streetlights with two or more lamps on their pole, or dual-lamp fixtures, can be partially switched off, ensuring that at least one lamp remains illuminated. In contrast, if there is only a single lamp, the power can only be reduced for half-night operation. This half-night operation helps save energy without compromising road safety. In addition, these energy savings also help minimize costs. However, this is always contingent on the city’s street lighting system being suitable for such half-night operation. If this is not the case, retrofitting is recommended, as it is definitely worthwhile—at least in the long run.
