Staircase lighting sets a unique scene
Anyone with a staircase in their home is often spoiled for choice when it comes to the ideal staircase lighting. A combination of safety lighting and attractive design should be created to best combine lighting effect and protection against accidents. We explain the best way to set the scene for your stairwell luminaires.
Stairwell lighting literally "points the way" to help homeowners or guests find their way to the next floor or down to the basement. Even the eye is guided in the right direction.
Different types of lighting for the stairs
Stairwells can be illuminated in a variety of ways. If you have a lot of space, you can use prestigious pendant luminaires & pendant staircase luminaires (including two or more lights) to provide impressive lighting. Wall lights are also always an option for staircases and often merge directly from the corridor or hallway into the staircase area. A wide variety of colors such as classic black or white and shapes to match the respective interior can be used here.
Direct staircase lighting
In addition to or as an alternative to the classic wall lights, LED recessed wall spots at the height of the step ensure good visibility of the step itself and illuminate it effectively. The wall lights are available in a wide variety of colors and shapes. White, black or anthracite are popular wall light colors that provide timeless and neutral lighting for the stairs.
This direct type of lighting with modern LED technology ensures that steps are clearly visible. This can be particularly important as an orientation light for children or older people.
Incidentally, ceiling lamps or ceiling spotlights remain the classic choice for staircases, as well-planned ceiling lighting with spotlights provides targeted illumination and can be planned individually.
Indirect LED staircase lighting without classic luminaires
Indirect lighting of the stairs can be achieved using LED strips and is a popular alternative to classic wall lights. Such an LED strip should meet the latest standards. Cheap DIY store LED strips usually do not last long or the lighting effect is disappointing. There are now effective high-performance LED strips that are so bright that they even make additional lighting in the stairwell unnecessary.
The LED strips are either laid over a stair joint along the flight of stairs or milled into the wood underneath the steps. This is best done directly for you by the staircase supplier.
You can also do it yourself!
With a little manual skill, you can also do this yourself. A narrow cooling profile for LED strips is inserted into the milled section of the stair tread and the LED strip is placed and connected in it.
Depending on the choice of routing width, size of the cooling profile and the LED strips used, you can influence the LED brightness. The great advantage of LED strips is certainly that they can be easily controlled or dimmed in terms of time and color using a wall switch, remote control, smartphone or tablet (via app).
This results in a very wide range of lighting options and the steps can be illuminated precisely according to individual requirements. You will find professional-quality LED stairwell luminaires from us.
Handrail lighting as an attractive lighting element in the stairwell
An illuminated handrail can also be used to great effect as a lighting element in the stairwell. Safety and design come together here too. An LED strip on the back of the handrail can be used to flexibly follow the course of the steps.
Connecting the lights for staircase lighting
As beautiful as staircase lighting may be, it must of course be possible to implement it somehow. A power connection at the start or end of the staircase is therefore essential. The (LED) staircase lighting is then routed to the power source as invisibly as possible via the wall attachment at the handrail or the staircase construction.
Tips for your staircase lights:
- Make sure there are enough connections available for the lights.
- Make a sketch of exactly where the staircase lighting is to be installed or make an appointment with our Lighting designers.
- Get an idea of what type of staircase lighting you would like to implement: indirect or direct staircase lighting?
- Which color suits your living or business space?
- Make sure that the LED wall spot fits into the recessed box for the desired wall spots.
