CE Mark

The abbreviation CE comes from French and stands for “Conformité Européenne,” which roughly translates to “European Community” or “European Conformity.” It is a quality mark based on applicable European directives and has been in use since the 1980s. In Germany, the CE mark is also sometimes known as the EG mark, based on the German translation “Europäische Gemeinschaft.”  This marking is, so to speak, a kind of technical passport for a lamp or, more generally, a product within the European Union. CE simply indicates that the luminaire meets the essential requirements of European directives.  It is not a safety certification mark, such as the VDE or GS mark, and is not intended for consumers but rather for regulatory authorities. These authorities monitor compliance with EU directives, and CE certification is the prerequisite for a product to be placed on the market in the EU at all. Consequently, a product may only be sold within Europe if it bears the CE marking. Ultimately, however, we as consumers or buyers do not need to pay attention to this.
