Twilight Switch

A twilight switch—also known as a twilight sensor—automatically turns one or more lights on or off depending on the amount of daylight. It also takes artificial lighting into account. The built-in light sensor measures the brightness of the surroundings and then determines whether it is already dark enough to require artificial lighting.  Such twilight switches are mainly used outdoors, for example to illuminate home entrances or driveways. However, given the growing importance of energy-efficient lighting, light sensors are also increasingly being used indoors. The sensitivity of the twilight switch should ideally be continuously adjustable, with an illuminance level of approximately 2 to 2,000 lux being appropriate for outdoor use.  To ensure the twilight switch functions properly, photodiodes or phototransistors are installed as light sensors. Photoresistors are used rather rarely. Some lamps also combine a twilight sensor with a motion detector, causing the light to turn on only when motion is detected in the dark. Twilight sensors may already be integrated into a light fixture at the time of purchase or can be purchased separately.
