DIN EN 1838

DIN EN 1838 is a European standard for emergency lighting in applied lighting technology, which replaced the previously applicable national standard in July 1999. The most important requirements under DIN EN 1838 and the Technical Rules for Workplaces (ASR A3.4/3) are as follows:

  • Uniformity: The ratio of the highest illuminance to the lowest illuminance must not exceed 40 to 1.
  • If the general lighting fails, the emergency lighting must reach 100% light output within 15 seconds.
  • The horizontal illuminance on the centerline of the escape and rescue route must be at least 1 lux.
  • The light sources must have a color rendering index of at least Ra 40.
