Explosion-proof lights

Explosion-proof luminaires are often referred to as “Ex luminaires” and feature a wide range of protective characteristics. These include, among other things, fire-resistant properties, shatter-resistant lamp covers, and a protection rating of at least IP 5X. Only when a luminaire meets all these requirements is it considered explosion-proof and may be used in the appropriate areas. Several standards specify the areas where such Ex lights must be used and the level of explosion hazard in those areas. DIN EN 50281, DIN EN 60079, and VDE 0165 classify work areas into different zones based on the degree of explosion hazard. These include, among others, Zone 0 (permanently and long-term hazardous), Zone 1 (occasionally hazardous), and Zone 2 (short-term hazardous) for flammable gases, mists, and vapors. For combustible dust, Zone 20 (long-term or frequent hazard) and Zones 21 and 22 (short-term hazard due to occasional stirring up) apply. For all of these zones, there are appropriately designed and specially manufactured lamps.
