Gimbal-mounted spotlights

Greater flexibility in installing and using the lights—that’s exactly what a gimbal-mounted spotlight is designed for. The term “gimbal-mounted” refers to a freely movable suspension system, in which a servomotor is built into the spotlight’s mounting bracket. This allows for any possible rotation, enabling the light beam to be individually adjusted and customized. Such gimbal-mounted spotlights are often installed on ceilings, as they can direct light to where it’s needed without requiring an additional suspension system. Simple ceiling lights, on the other hand, must be installed directly beneath the power outlet or positioned in the correct spot using a suspension system. With a gimbal suspension, a single rotation is all it takes to direct the light in a different direction—creating flexible lighting from the ceiling. The servomotor of a gimbal-mounted spotlight operates using two intersecting, mutually perpendicular rotary bearings, which offer advantages beyond just lighting design. Compasses in airplanes and cooktops on ships are also mounted using a gimbal mechanism, as these must remain exactly horizontal relative to the ground—even during turning maneuvers or in rough seas—in order to continue indicating the correct direction or, quite simply, to prevent food from falling off the cooktop.
