Light Pollution

Light emission refers to the process that leads to light pollution or light smog. Lamps emit light and are therefore light-emitting. However, if they are improperly installed outdoors or if their light is directed upward into the open sky, this can result in disruptive light. Light emissions can occur, for example, with streetlights whose light shines into windows at night, disturbing residents. But light pollution caused by light emissions in large cities—which brightens the night sky with artificial light sources—is viewed particularly negatively. This results in a lack of darkness, which not only makes stars less visible but, above all, has a negative impact on animals. It also leads to more frequent cases of insomnia in humans. The German Society for Lighting Technology has therefore published specific measurement and evaluation procedures for light emissions.
