Optical fiber

An optical fiber is capable of guiding light through total internal reflection within a transparent material. It typically consists of a thinner core made of a material with a higher refractive index than the surrounding material.  When light enters the core of the optical fiber, it is totally reflected at the interface between the core and the cladding and remains confined within the core, allowing it to be transmitted over a longer distance. Optical fibers are typically used in telecommunications and lighting technology.
