Light pollution

Light pollution denotes the excessive and undesirable lightening of the night by artificial light sources. It arises from stray light that radiates into the atmosphere and is mainly caused by human activities in urban areas. Street lamps, advertising boards, facade lighting and poorly oriented lights make a significant contribution to lightening the night sky.

Light pollution not only affects the view of stars and astronomical observations, but also has ecological and health effects. It disturbs the natural day-night rhythm of humans and animals, influences sleep patterns and decimates nocturnal animal species that are dependent on darkness. It also leads to waste of energy when light is used improperly.

Measures to reduce light pollution include the use of well -shielded lights that target the light downwards, energy -saving technologies such as LEDs and temporary lighting plans in cities and municipalities.
