Devices equipped with mesh technology amplify a wireless signal like a repeater. For example, repeaters can be used to amplify the Wi-Fi signal and extend its range. Mesh-enabled lights—such as those used in the Connect and Casambi smart lighting systems—work in a similar way. Every component integrated into the Smart Light System also functions as a signal booster, allowing even larger areas and greater distances to be covered. With the mesh function, the light sources and fixtures connect to one another. The Bluetooth mesh network forms the foundation of a Smart Light System, enabling the lighting to be controlled via a wireless network. The advantage of this wireless control, made possible by mesh technology, is particularly evident when retrofitting lighting systems, as laying cables after the fact is not only very labor-intensive but also costly. Furthermore, Bluetooth Mesh makes it possible to control devices from different manufacturers together and has thus established itself as a global standard. Smartphones and tablets can communicate directly with this Bluetooth Mesh network without a gateway, making the operation of a Smart Light System based on it particularly simple and convenient. Another advantage of this system is its “self-healing” capability, which means that a communication path is automatically rerouted if one of the relaying devices in the network fails, ensuring that the mesh network always remains reliable.
