In the lighting industry, visual tasks and the appropriate lighting level are often talked about, which means as much lighting that is tailored to an activity. The more difficult a visual work is, the higher the lighting level must be. As the name suggests, it is important to recognize and see things in such tasks, whereby the light/dark contrasts, the color contrasts, the detailedness and the speed of contrast perception and the period play a role.

Examples of such visual tasks range from reading and writing at the desk, to working on the computer to the detailed graphics draftsman - depending on the level of lighting and the brightness must be higher and sometimes a lower is enough. This applies both in the commercial area and in private households, because the eyes can be damaged if the lighting is incorrect.

The area of the visual task, which refers to the part of the workplace, is particularly important for lighting planning, where the actual visual task is provided. The values for the illuminance defined in DIN EN 12464-1 standard also apply in the DIN EN 12464-1 standard. It is also important that the work area of the visual task is always a bit brighter than the surroundings around it.
