In the lighting industry, people often talk about visual tasks and the appropriate lighting level for them, which essentially means lighting conditions tailored to a specific activity. The more difficult a visual task is, the higher the lighting level must be. As the name suggests, it is important for such tasks to be able to clearly recognize and see objects, with light-dark contrasts, color contrasts, level of detail, the speed of contrast perception, and duration all playing a role. Examples of such visual tasks range from reading and writing at a desk to working on a computer to detailed graphic design—depending on the task, the lighting level and brightness may need to be higher at times, while at other times a lower level is sufficient. This applies both in commercial settings and in private households, as improper lighting can damage the eyes.  The most important factor in lighting design is the visual task area, which refers to the part of the workspace where the actual visual task is performed.
