Maintenance value

European lighting standards define minimum values—such as illuminance—that must not be fallen below; these are also referred to as maintenance values. Once a lighting system reaches only the maintenance value after a certain period of operation, it must be serviced. The maintenance value is abbreviated as Ēm. One reason illuminance decreases over time is due to the accumulation of dirt and the aging of luminaires and light sources. However, to ensure that the maintenance value is not reached too quickly, a higher initial value must be set during installation, since frequent maintenance is not only time-consuming but also costly. This initial value is calculated using the maintenance factor. The goal is therefore to ensure that a lighting system’s maintenance value is not reached until several years have passed, in order to keep necessary maintenance to a minimum and to best meet lighting standards based on room type, visual task, and activity—rather than merely meeting the minimum requirements.
