IP Certification

TheIP Certification (English:IngressProtection orIInternationalProtection) specifies whichProtection Class a product has. The rating consists of two digits, e.g., IP 44. The first digit indicates the level of protection against dust, and the second indicates the level of protection against water. A light fixture with IP44 is protected against solid foreign objects with a diameter of 1 mm or greater and against water spray from any direction.

Especially outdoors or in the bathroom, you should pay attention to the IP rating of light fixtures, because this is where theLighting They are usually exposed to rain, water splashes, or foreign objects. This IP certification is in place to prevent damage to the lamps or a reduction in their service life. As a rule of thumb: The higher the IP rating, the better the lights are protected.

Outdoor lights typically start at an IP44 rating; however, there is no general rule for this, as it depends primarily on the light’s location. For example, if it is placed outdoors in a flower bed, the IP rating should be higher than that of a light located on a covered patio or indoors.
