Protection Class

Electronic devices can be classified into different protection classes. These are designated by the so-calledIP-Certification is specified, which comes from English and stands forICongress Protection orIInternational Protection. The IP rating consists of two digits, e.g., IP44. The first digit indicates the level of protection a device has against foreign objects such as dust. The second digit indicates the level of protection against water. A light fixture with IP44 is protected against solid foreign objects with a diameter of 1 mm or greater and against water spray from any direction.

Anywhere a light fixture might come into contact with water or dirt, the IP rating should be taken into account. This is especially true for outdoor use, but adequate protection is just as important indoors—for example, in the bathroom or kitchen. This is the only way to ultimately prevent a shortened service life or damage. As a general rule: The higher the IP rating, the better the light fixture is protected. Which IP rating is actually required therefore always depends on the location of theLighting ...whereby a simple distinction between indoor and outdoor areas is not sufficient.
