The different types of emergency lighting

Emergency lighting is becoming increasingly important in the construction of residential and commercial buildings. Especially in apartment blocks, public buildings, shopping centres, theatres or museums, safety lighting must be provided to protect visitors. Emergency luminaires are the central point here.

Emergency lighting for hospitals

Emergency lighting can also mean backup lighting in the event of a power failure, e.g. in hospitals (ops), where light is indispensable at any time of day or night. But this is a special case. The lighting level is usually below the brightness level of normal lighting, but ensures that work and processes can be completed safely even in the event of a power failure.

This type of backup lighting must be guaranteed for at least three hours (mains-independent). The nominal operating time for escape routes is 1 hour. The emergency luminaires can be operated via battery or an additional emergency power unit. The duty cycle must be less than 1 second.

Safety lighting for escape routes

In our luminaire shop, we offer emergency luminaires for escape routes, escape routes and emergency exits. This type of anti-panic lighting is typically marked and immediately guides visitors to emergency exits.

These emergency lamps are also important for companies and businesses with many employees. In the event of a fire, chemical accident or other dangerous occurrence, everyone needs to know immediately where to find the rescue door to the outside.

Pathways Orientation through emergency luminaires

In the event of accidents or damage of any kind, orientation assistance for those affected is indispensable. With emergency luminaires positioned above or next to exits, people can reach the exits quickly and safely and pass the escape routes.

These luminaires are labelled with drawn persons and arrows pointing in the desired direction.

Reliable manufacturers for emergency lighting

Our brand-name luminaire manufacturerSLV, for example, has numerous anti-panic luminaires in its range. Other manufacturers such as ISOLED offer reliable linear luminaires that provide bright illumination in halls, corridors, cellars or escape routes.

These line luminaires support regular working operations and are particularly well protected against dust or in the event of smoke because they are highly visible.

According to the relevant DIN EN1838 standard, the minimum intensity of emergency lighting needs to be at least 1 lux across the width of the escape route. In addition, the uniformity of illuminance must not deviate by more than 40:1. This ensures that people with impaired vision can still find their way to the rescue site.

The contrast effect of smoke usually diminishes considerably. So basic emergency lighting needs to be provided with a specified level of brightness.

Guidelines for correct emergency luminaire installation

As mentioned above, DIN EN 1838 should be consulted as the basis for safety lighting. To ensure that emergency luminaire installation works smoothly and is carried out correctly, we have compiled the following tips:

  • Mount emergency luminaires at least 2 m above the floor

  • Escape routes should be illuminated to a width of at least 2 metres

  • Fit emergency luminaires above or next to all emergency exits or escape route doors

  • The distance from the emergency luminaire to the floor must not be more than 2 m near stairs or in the event of changes in walkway level (if visitors are suddenly going uphill or downhill)

  • In any case, clearly mark directional changes such as crossings, corridors, hallways, lifts and escape routes

  • Use emergency lights at first aid stations, defibrillators and fire extinguishers

  • At exits, emergency lights must be mounted a maximum of 2 metres apart

  • Outdoor emergency luminaires or outdoor safety luminaires also need to provide orientation in addition to appropriate signage
