Staircase lighting uniquely set in scene

Anyone who has a staircase in their home is often spoilt for choice as to how staircase lighting should ideally be implemented. A combination of safety lighting and attractive design should be created to best combine lighting effect and protection against accidents. We explain the best way to showcase your stairwell luminaires.

Stairwell lighting literally "points the way" so that homeowners or guests can find their way to the next floor or down to the cellar. Even the eye is guided in the right direction.

Different types of staircase lighting

Stairwells can be illuminated in a variety of ways. Those with plenty of space can use prestigious pendant luminaires (also two- or multi-flame) to provide impressive lighting. Wall luminaires are also always an option for stairwells and often merge directly from the corridor or hallway into the staircase area. Here, a wide variety of colours, such as classic black or white, and shapes can be used to match the interior in question.

Direct staircase lighting

In addition or as an alternative to classic wall luminaires, LED recessed wall spots at the level of the staircase step provide good visibility of the step itself and illuminate it effectively. The wall luminaires are available in a wide variety of colours and shapes. White, black or anthracite are popular wall luminaire colours that provide timeless and neutral lighting for the staircase.

By means of this direct lighting type with modern LED technology, stair treads are clearly visible. Especially for children or elderly people, this can be important as an orientation light.

Incidentally, ceiling lamps or ceiling spots remain the classic choice for staircases because well-planned ceiling lighting with spots provides targeted illumination and can be planned individually.

Indirect LED staircase lighting without classic luminaires

Indirect  staircase lighting can be provided by LED strips and is a popular alternative to classic wall luminaires. Such an LED strip should meet the latest standards. Inexpensive DIY store LED strips usually do not provide long-lasting pleasure or the lighting effect is disappointing. There are now effective high-performance LED strips that are so bright that they even make additional lighting in the stairwell unnecessary.

The LED strips are either laid over an existing stair joint along the flight of stairs or milled into the wood below the stair treads. This is best implemented for you directly by the stair tread supplier.

You can also do it yourself!

With a little manual skill, you can also do this yourself. A narrow cooling profile for LED strips is inserted into the milling of the stair tread and the LED strip is placed and connected in it.

Depending on the choice of milling width, the size of the cooling profile and the LED strips used, you can influence the LED brightness. The great advantage of LED strips is certainly that they can be easily controlled or dimmed in terms of time and colour by wall switch, remote control, smartphone or tablet (via app).

This results in a very large lighting scope and the stairs can be illuminated exactly according to individual needs. With us, you will find LED staircase luminaires in professional quality.

Handrail lighting as a beautiful lighting element in the staircase

A illuminated handrail can also be used to great effect as a lighting element in the staircase . Here, too, safety and design go hand in hand. An LED strip on the back of the handrail makes it possible to follow the steps flexibly.

Connecting the luminaires for staircase lighting

As beautiful as staircase lighting may be, it must of course be possible to implement it somehow. A power connection at the beginning or end of the staircase is essential. The (LED) staircase lighting is then routed as invisibly as possible to the power source via the wall attachment at the handrail or the staircase structure.

Tips for your staircase lighting:

Make sure that there are enough connections for the luminaires. Make a sketch of exactly where the staircase lighting is to be installed or make an appointment with one of our lighting planners Lighting designers. Get an idea of the type of staircase lighting you would like to implement. Indirect or direct staircase lighting? Which colour suits your home or business premises? Be sure that the LED wall spot fits into the recessed socket of the desired wall spots.

Have the LED installation or the installation of the staircase lights carried out by a certified electrician!
