Hardly any other company had such a great influence on architecture, art and design as the State Bauhaus in the years 1919-1933. This also resulted in the famous"Bauhaus lamps and luminaires" the classics for wall, ceiling, table and floor. The main aim of the art school was to develop rational drafts and designs into globally influential design trends. Today, it is part of different living styles.

What is the Bauhaus?

in 1919, Walter Gropius founded the State Bauhaus in Weimar, Thuringia. Although the Bauhaus only existed for 14 years, its influence on building and design continues to this day. Gropius and his comrades-in-arms wanted to create a total work of art that utilised the possibility of industrial production and thus combined art, architecture and craftsmanship.

Many Bauhaus works appear austere and functional because of their angular lines. However, their simplicity is also the secret of the timeless elegance that characterises all luminaires to this day.

The icon of modern design

The State Bauhaus produced numerous timeless Bauhaus lamps. The most famous of them is the WG 24 which was designed by Wilhelm Wagenfeld and can be found in our lamp shop under the brand Tecnolumen. The lamp follows the design principle "form follows function" and is also considered an icon of modern industrial design.

The Wagenfeld WG24

Wilhelm Wagenfeld was born in Bremen in 1900 and worked as a silversmith, teacher and designer. He studied at the Bauhaus from 1923 to 1925 and also worked in the metal workshop, where he passed his journeyman's examination as a silversmith in 1924. He gradually turned to working on lamps and in 1924, in collaboration with Carl Jakob Jucker, he created the Wagenfeld lamp WG24, which made history.

Its characteristic features are the glass shade, the glass or metal shaft and the round base plate. It is considered an icon of industrial design and the prototype of the Bauhaus lamps. A first attempt to sell it on a larger scale in 1924 failed because many components had to be very laboriously made by hand.  The German lamp label Tecnolumen is the only manufacturer worldwide with a licence from Wilhelm Wagenfeld who is allowed to reproduce and produce the Bauhaus lamps Wagenfeld.

Material of Bauhaus lamps

Besides tubular steel and laminated wood, sheet glass was one of the preferred materials at the Bauhaus. Glass was considered as a source of reference to architecture as well as industry and often served as a connecting element within a piece of furniture or a luminaire because of its transparency.
