What is the difference between a base and a lampholder?
The base of a lamp and the socket of a luminaire are two counterparts that complement each other. Together, they establish a mechanical and electrical contact between the luminaire and the light source. The base is a part of the light source, while the luminaire socket is installed in a luminaire, for example a pendant luminaire.
Which types of base are the most common?
At first, probably few people think about this, but it is an important question for choosing the right LED lamp, for example.
The most common base types are roughly divided into 2 categories. The Edison base (E) is a screw socket familiar from incandescent lamps , while the plug-in base (G) is inserted into the corresponding plug-in socket via 2 wire pins, a so-called bi-pin socket. Thus, the plug-in base does not have a classic screw thread.
To distinguish between the different types of sockets, they are marked with numbers. For Edison bases, such as E27, the number indicates the diameter of the base. For plug-in bases such as G9, on the other hand, the number indicates the distance between the pins in millimetres.
