Dimmable LED light sources

In our consultations, we recommend the use of dimmable lighting, especially in living and dining areas. The brightness of dimmable lamps and illuminants can be adjusted. This enables you to adjust the lighting situation, e.g. for dining table lighting, to current requirements. If you want to spend a cosy evening with friends and family, you can reduce the brightness, while you have full brightness for more demanding visual tasks such as reading.

What dimming techniques are there?

The question of WHETHER a luminaire or light source is dimmable can only be answered with a yes or no. When it comes to the question of HOW a luminaire is dimmed, there are many more options to choose from. We show you what to look for when choosing the right dimmable light source.

Dimmable by phase control / phase cut-off

If an LED lamp is dimmable by phase control or phase cut-off, you need a suitable LED dimmer or universal dimmer. A dimmer is a device that can be installed in a switch box or fuse box to adjust the brightness of a luminaire or lamp. There are a number of things to consider when choosing the right dimmer. In addition to the power that the dimmer can handle, compatibility with the desired luminaire must also be taken into account. It is not possible to make a blanket statement about which lamp is compatible with which dimmer, but many manufacturers do recommend dimmers.

Dimmable by switch

If you have not installed a dimmer and do not have the option of retrofitting one, the best choice is a lamp that can be dimmed by switch. These can be dimmed with a normal light switch. As a rule, dimmable lamps are dimmed in 3 steps by switching them on and off several times. Typically, the lamps and luminaires have a so-called memory function. If the light is switched on in the morning, the same brightness is provided as in the evening before.

Smart Light illuminants

Smart LED lamps do not require an additional dimmer, as they are dimmed via smartphone/tablet or remote control. In addition to dimming, the illuminants have other functions, so you can also set them in colour or change the light colour from warm white to cool white. With some Smart Light systems, you can combine several lamps into scenes or set different colour change modes. DALI

If you are interested in the possibilities of dimming luminaires and lamps, you will sooner or later come across DALI. Dali stands for Digital Addressable Lighting Interface and is an international, manufacturer-independent interface standard for controlling dimmable luminaires. To be able to dim a luminaire via DALI, the following prerequisites must be met: To be able to use DALI, a 5-core power cable must be installed and the luminaire must be DALI dimmable. Dimmable LED lamps (e.g. E27 lamps) are not DALI-capable per se, but they can be integrated into the system via DALI dimming factors.
