What does Dali lighting control mean?

With the help of Dali lighting controls (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface / digital adressable
lighting interface), the illumination of complete buildings can be individually controlled in addition to solitary luminaires and extensive lighting systems.

In addition, you can realise complex lighting scenes, extraordinary lighting scenarios as well as selective dimming and coloured illumination. In short, Dali lighting control provides uncomplicated digital communication within a wide range of electronic lighting technologies.

What can a smart Dali control system for light do?

With the help of the so-called BUS system of the Dali lighting controls, even highly complex illuminations can be realised. This system allows, among other things, switches to be programmed completely independently for different operating devices and for countless lighting scenes.

The set programming can be changed again at a later time. In addition, remote maintenance and evaluation can be carried out for individual components by means of feedback. The latter is carried out with the help of a central interface.

This detailed control also allows you to evaluate the energy consumption of the individual luminaires. In addition, defective luminaires are marked, whereby the possible fault can always be traced through the Dali lighting control system. In order to make full use of the advantages of a Dali lighting control system, PCs or tablets are usually used for operation.

Dali lighting control basics

In order for Dali lighting controls to function properly, all components of the lighting systems must be equipped with a Dali interface. Each of the interfaces has a so-called short address that enables communication with the main interface (Dali Gateway).

The individual commands are transmitted by control devices such as sensors, switches and dimmers. The commands are directed to operating devices such as luminaires and are executed by them. The bus system of a Dali lighting control system also enables status reports of the individual operating devices to be sent via the network for detailed evaluation.

Dali lighting control basics - versatility and best possible efficiency

The Dali control system for lighting uses a data protocol that uses a data rate of 1,200 bits/second at 16 volts. It is imperative that the data line be insulated against external influences. In addition, there is no connection between the line and the power supply.

The network of the Dali lighting control system can be set up in different ways, such as star-shaped, tree-shaped or line-shaped. However, a ring shape should be avoided at all costs. The maximum length of the data line is 300 metres.

Each luminaire / each control gear can be assigned to 16 groups that can be programmed with a maximum of 16 scenes (light values). Each individual light value is designed for 254 levels. A maximum of 64 actuators may run per Dali Light Control BUS, each of which is designed for a maximum of 2 milliamps (mA) of current.

The complete Dali circuit is generally limited to 250 milliamps. A voltage drop that can occur between the control gear (actuator) and the transmitter must not exceed 2 volts (according to the IEC 62386 standard). The protocol of the Dali lighting control systems has approximately 200 commands that can be used for a wide variety of projects.

If required, the Dali lighting control system can be integrated into subordinate or superordinate systems of a smart building automation system with the help of corresponding interfaces.

Enormous advantages of a Dali lighting control system

The innovative Dali control system for light is therefore a standard adjustment of different lighting systems. A Dali lighting control system is therefore compatible with all brands and manufacturers of lighting technology that use this standard.

At present, further Dali lighting control principles are already available under the IEC 62386 standard, which not only apply to operating devices but also define certain rules for control devices. Dali lighting controls can be used universally, for example for street lighting and office buildings. Thanks to the modern BUS-capable Dali lighting control, you can configure lighting systems individually for entire floors as well as individual/multiple rooms.

Due to the user-friendly Dali lighting control basics, you do not have to determine the distribution of your lighting units during the planning stage. Furthermore, no relays are needed to operate dimmers and switches. This is done exclusively by means of Dali control for light.

Examples of Dali-capable luminaires:

  • Molto Luce Rinq LED ring lamp Ø 120cm

  • Molto Luce After 8 LED dining table lamp 122cm
  • LED panel insert lamp
