The history of the Macchina della Luce

The Macchina della Luce is a lamp created and manufactured by Enzo Catellani. It was created for the company Catellani & Smith and is the centre of the room with its timeless elegance.

In the foreground of this structure are the colours, which are supposed to resemble the sun or fire. Among other things, the intentions of light refraction by Enzo Catellani are behind it. The lamp is handmade and comes from the Luci d'Oro collection. In the year 2,000, this royal lamp was created.

Appearance and variations:

The interior lamp consists of four metal discs of different sizes, which are placed one below the other. The diameter of the first, uppermost plate is 80cm. The following plate has a diameter of 50cm. The penultimate disc measures 30cm and the last and smallest disc is 18cm in diameter.

The number of plates and the sizes of the diameters are variable. The Macchina della Luce is available in the colour variations gold leaf coated, silver leaf coated and copper coated. In the living and dining area, as well as in the entrance area, the pendant luminaire is particularly attractive.

This luminaire is also available as a wall version. Here, the outermost, largest disc stands on the wall and connects to the other discs at narrow intervals.

Technology behind the Macchina

The four discs of the luminaire are slightly curved and LED lights are mounted on the tops of the last three discs.

These curvatures provide upward light distribution and glare-free, soft room lighting. The light is hidden in the curved disc, radiates it to the panel above and is emitted indirectly into the room.

The lamp is, like most models by Catellani & Smith, dimmable and contains an energy-efficient technology. Due to the indirect light effect, the unique luminaire has a withdrawing effect and yet it is very special and expressive. The individual look and the modern function include a long service life. The luminaire can be dimmed with a phase cut dimmer.

A non-dimmable version of the Macchina della Luce is also available, which gives the room a proud and monotonous look.

Further details and special features:

The copper and gold versions give off sunny, warm and inviting light, whereas the silver option affects a bright, cool and sophisticated light.

Furthermore, the minimum spacing of the panels is always kept the same and is 25cm. The accompanying 1.45m long rods that hold the panels together can be shortened to size. For particularly high rooms, the rods are available up to three metres.
