This design from 1924 by Wilhelm Wagenfeld is called "The Bauhaus Lamp" and certainly deserves this name. The characteristic form, which is primarily characterised by clarity and the highest level of craftsmanship, is an eye-catcher in itself. The opal glass diffuser in the shape of a spherical segment emits the light softly and evenly into the room.
At the age of 23, Wagenfeld was accepted as an apprentice at the State Bauhaus in Weimar and designed this classic luminaire just one year later, based on a study assignment by the head of the metal workshops, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy. According to Wagenfeld's conception, designs of the State Bauhaus should be industrial products and have a corresponding appearance. In fact, however, they were handmade - so even today, in the only edition of this lamp authorised by Wagenfeld, everything is handmade according to the original specifications in terms of dimensions and material.
These lamps are manufactured individually and are numbered consecutively. This number is clearly related to the Bauhaus and Tecnolumen sign, which can also be found on the base of the luminaire. "The Bauhaus Lamp" is a masterpiece that exemplifies the philosophy of the State Bauhaus in Weimar and illustrates the manufacturer Tecnolumen's dedication to this type of design.
The Wagenfeld lamp was awarded the "Gute Form" design prize of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1982 and is one of the "Best 200 Designs for the Year 2000".
